Henry James Letters

The goal of this digital edition is to provide an inclusive, reliable, and easily searchable archive for all extant letters, telegrams, and notes written by Henry James. While the print edition of The Complete Letters of Henry James continues to employ a somewhat complicated “plain text” editing rationale—in which every cancelled word or letter (and often conjectural readings of them), above-the-line insertions, and other holographic idiosyncrasies are indicated by means of an extended range of typographical symbols—the digital platform for this project intends to simplify the presentation of James’s letters by using a “clear text” method. This resource will be welcomed especially by scholars who want to quote from a reliable letter-text, but who have neither the means nor the need to reproduce all the peculiar typographical elements that the print edition incorporates. And it will make it much easier for a more general audience to read James’s letters without the kinds of textual encumbrances that tend to interfere with quick comprehension.
