Henry James Letters

Henry James

“It is indeed, I think, of the very essence of a good letter to be shown,—it is wasted if it is kept for one.”

Henry James to Grace Norton, 17 October 1882

This digital edition of The Complete Letters of Henry James

opens a new door for scholars and general readers alike to the full archive of the correspondence of one of the most prolific and influential writers of the modern era. Launching out from the critically acclaimed print series, the open-access digital edition will allow readers/viewers to experience and appreciate James’s letters in new ways and in new dimensions, as it moves beyond the inherent limitations of the bound volumes.

A principal goal of Henry James Letters

is to encourage constructive interaction with its users. Readers are invited to be alert especially for possible supplements to the letters’ annotation. Please notify the project director of any significant allusive phrasings or blind quotations you suspect, if they have gone unremarked. These will be vetted by the project collaborators and new annotations posted as warranted.
